WHO WE ARE
Our Origins
COMBRA was started by a group of Ugandans including professionals, people with disabilities and business people who had attended CBR training in United Kingdom (UK) at the University College London. The founders realized that the same course was worthy starting in Uganda as it would support rehabilitation of persons with disabilities within their communities.
COMBRA tested the Community Based Rehabilitation approach concept before starting the training through running a CBR program for disabled and other older persons in Bwaise an urban poor area north of Kampala City in 1990. The project activities were in relation to disability and include the following: awareness raising, training of CBR volunteers, Identification, assessment and provision of relevant support which included home visits, provision of assistive devices and referral among others. The project was evaluated in 1995 and the results culminated into extension of the project emphasizing capacity building of the community to run the programme when COMBRA left in 2001.
The purpose of the Bwaise community project was a two-fold attempt to provide services to PWDs and secondly to provide a hands-on training ground for COMBRA’s CBR students. As the community project grew, the Bwaise community purchased land and COMBRA constructed its training center and developed a curriculum for training in CBR for grassroots workers.
The project was handed over to the community of Bwaise in 2003 and has continued successfully to this day.

Our Objectives
- Develop positive attitudes towards persons with disabilities; promote self-reliance and integration into the mainstream of society.
- Develop and sustain a national and an international center for capacity building of community based rehabilitation work.
- Facilitate the development of technical skills that can be utilized in designing and production of assistive aids that are economically realistic and culturally acceptable, using appropriate technology.
- Put in place income generating activities and capacity building strategies for further development and sustainability of the organization.
